Bookseller: Part Time

THE ROLE:

We’re looking to hire a member of staff for a minimum of one day a week (7 hours) to work on the shop floor and support necessary admin, with further hours/ shifts to support cover on the shop floor and regular events off site, both in Brixton and in Greater London. These would usually be in the evenings or at the weekend, but not always.

We’re a small shop, so when a team member is on shift they work alone and are responsible for both opening and closing the shop. As any member of the team currently, you would be expected to engage with customers and sell books, as well as doing discrete admin tasks where necessary, including but not limited to:

Additional TASKS WILL INCLUDE (BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO):

Supporting RTB comms, including social media and crafting our newsletter 

  • Processing returns 

  • Taking customer orders 

  • Ensuring shop has appropriate stock control


ABOUT US:

Round Table Books CIC (a community interest company) is a Brixton based bookshop. We amplify marginalised voices in children’s and adult literature, and exclusively stock historically underrepresented authors on shelves. This includes representing voices spanning race, gender, sexuality, disability, neurodivergence and the intersections therein. We’ve just celebrated our 5th birthday and our team is continuing to grow!

While our bookshop is based in Brixton, we host and support many external events. Last year, we were the bookshop partner for Merky Fest, Black British Literature Festival (kids), Africa Writes, and supported countless events - book launches, special author events, and corporate.  We also run a monthly book club in partnership with Dark Matter Marketing.

 
 

The person

RTB is staffed by a friendly, enthusiastic and driven team. We are passionate about the shop’s mission to support writers and readers of marginalised literature, and are able to get stuck in on a range of tasks where necessary. We are flexible, effective and responsive. You are a self-starter who thrives in a changing environment and enjoys problem solving.

Essential Criteria

  • You are passionate about books, and read widely (ie various genres) across the type of books we stock 

  • You have a good knowledge or willingness to develop knowledge of both children’s, middle grade and young adult books

  • You enjoy and are comfortable engaging with a wide range of people, are proactive in your approach to customer service, are confident in responding to requests and recommending books based on customer demands. 

  • You have a strong command of writing, and are either confident or willing to develop confidence in producing social media / written communications 

  • You have strong time management skills, good at administrative tasks, and are able to be a self starter to identify and prioritise tasks 

  • You are able to multitask, taking on discrete pieces of work

DEsirable Criteria:

  • You have had experience in either bookselling or working in a Community Interest Company
